Hello!

I'm Jimmy, and when I'm not acting, playing music, or writing, I'm a Welsh re-enactor.

This is the first post on a blog that will hopefully show the historical clothes projects I have on, the research I'm doing, and shamelessly plug some of the shows I'm in! Hope you enjoy following my quest to make myself look as old fashioned as possible!

So, without further ado, have a few pictures of my early medieval impressions. I've been a member of Regia Anglorum for...crikey, eight years now! And it's a pretty research based group, so I try to keep my kit as provenanced as I can.

The first picture is my 'generic' early medieval look (plus gloves I knitted, because I was cold!). It's my 'jeans and t-shirt' look for the 9-11th century comprising tunics, hose, braies, shoes, and in this one, my lovely sword by Heron Armoury.

The second picture, courtesy of my lovely girlfriend, and fellow re-enactor Peryn (aka Isabel Northwode) shows an addition to the first bunch: my hood. It's the Skjoldehamn hood, and my excuse for the slight mixture of looks is that this was an SCA event, so a tiny bit of culture-hopping was ok! It's also got my nice silver pendant in, and my arm rings. Bling is the thing!

The last picture is of me in my 'full Viking' look, with Peryn in hers! My kit is by no means finished, and I need to work a lot on the jacket, make some decent trousers, and get some nice belt mounts and a fighting knife for extra shininess!

Sources: The Old English Hexateuch

Goodness me! Sorry about the hiatus there, everyone. I've got lots of news! As some will know, I've moved house to Scotland recently. That's pretty much taken life over for the last month or so, as it's a big move for me, and a stressful thing to do at the best of times. It's been made especially difficult because winter always gets a bit dark and cold and sad for me. The Old English Hexateuch (AKA MS Cotton Claudius B) is an amazing resource, available for free on the British Library website. The Insane Llangors Textile

Sorry for the hiatus, readers! It's been a whirlwind time at Chez LittleWelshViking. I've started a PhD, travelled across the sea to Canada, put on a play wot I wrote, and all the while been working on re-enactment clothes. Let's talk about the latest project for now, and I'll do some more catch-up posts later in the month. I'm doing a crazy mad embroidery. Like, properly insane. It's called the Llangorse textile, and it's a well-preserved piece of very fine linen (c63tpi) from the 10th century. It was burned and buried on a crannog (island castle) site in Llangors, near Brecon. The linen is embroidered with fine, unspun 2-ply silk thread, in imitation of the fine brocaded silks of the Middle East in the period. Cotehardie Fun!

Right, time for some later stuff than last time. This post is about my late 14th century cotehardie. Basically it's a big wool coat to go over your tunic. Speculum Humanae Salvationis. Cotehardies all over! The design is going to be based on mostly manuscript depictions, such as "The Romance of Alexander", and "Speculum Humanae Salvationis". It will also be based on some memorials, and on the experience of other re-enactors. As far as I can tell, these things were pretty simple. I'm not bothering with the grand assiette sleeves ,as they're not necessary for the period, so this will essentially be a tunic, slightly shaped to hug the body, with narrow, button closure sleeves. Ho hum. Let's liven this bad boy up a bit...PARTI-COLOUR! Speculum Humanae Salvationis. Cotes! Yes! A half-and-half! This will be a silly coat! Sorry: "cote". I love parti-colour.
